ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Guatemala boasts diverse growing areas and conditions that produce great coffee. Today, the country is revered as a producer of some of the tastiest and most refined cups in the world. The Huehuetenango region is known for its picturesque landscapes, mountain ranges, and rich culture of indigenous ethnic groups. Overall, the quality of coffee grown in Guatemala is increasing due to the diversity of producers in the industry. This is demonstrated by the Mujeres de Comal, an all-female group of producers.
In general, cooperatives are growing in Guatemala and are increasingly attractive to so many small growers because they often offer farmers financing and other support to improve their farming and processing. Thanks to COMAL’s support, the producers involved in the Café de Mujeres project are focusing on improving the quality of their coffee and the environmental sustainability of their farms. They participate in livestock-sharing projects, produce their own organic fertilizers, attend workshops on entrepreneurship and financial literacy, and also renovate regularly to keep their trees healthy and productive. Coffee is the main cash crop for these producers, but they also grow subsistence crops such as beans and maize. They also plant trees to preserve biodiversity and protect groundwater supplies, as well as various flowers and plants that attract bees and increase their honey production.
ABOUT THE TASTE
We roast our Guatemala for espresso. It brings out the strengths of this coffee, namely the fullness and sweetness of milk chocolate and hazelnuts, complemented by the subtle acidity of red apple.
