Origin

Populus Coffee began working with the Long Miles Coffee Project when the roaster started roasting coffee. After learning their story and tasting their coffee, it became their only option in Burundi. Over the years, the roaster has had the pleasure of getting to know the people behind the project and has been grateful to call them her friends.

The founders of LMCP, Ben and Kristy, are from the USA. They moved to Burundi in 2011 and saw injustice and poor farming practices permeate the country’s newly privatized coffee industry. They also saw that roasters around the world were struggling to source consistently great coffee from Burundi. Recognizing the need for transparency and great coffee, they founded Long Miles Coffee in 2013 as a farmer-driven model of coffee production. In their first season, they worked with just fifty coffee growers. They are now working with over 5,500 coffee-growing families on eleven unique hills in Burundi and are looking to expand into Uganda and Kenya.
